Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the option to contest particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
