Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
