Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Group

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in power within the city.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.

The Warrior Group Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Dividing the Cast

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Warrior Group

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might appear unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise started the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the secret base, attacking the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied House Halovar and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in quest for the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the recent installment’s follow-up content, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can expect learning which players will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
