A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
